The name of the game.

Construction is the name of our game. However, as we know, leagues and teams consist of various roles, positions, and personnel.

General workers, laborers, tradespeople, foremen, superintendents, managers, owners all play a role. They all contribute to the process and are all necessary.

Things get less clear, however, when we look at how people progress through industry ranks. Why do some great players not make great captains or coaches?

Some owners have never even played the game. But, they have business degrees or a natural entrepreneurial spirit that sees them through.

What position do you play?

Let’s briefly look at each of the key positions:

-Player: They might have made the team from an apprenticeship or even got game time, having only been a laborer. Regardless, they are the grassroots personnel, and if they’re good, they’re probably hardworking, skilled, efficient, and communicate well.

-Captain: These are the top-dog on the field, a site foreman, or lead hand. They are vital for on-site success. They led by example and got promoted into the role through performance. This is their first taste of bigger picture thinking, leadership, and motivation.

-Coach: Purely a supervisory role, a pure management, and leadership position. They direct the team, set goals, manage clients, and liaise directly with the owner. Depending upon the company’s size, they could have come up through the ranks on-site or via the academic path.

-Owner: You! You’re responsible for the big picture, for all of the responsibilities behind the scenes, all of the work, roles, tasks, and responsibilities that must be done in order to keep the machine rolling and the team in the league! Owners don’t have to have come through the ranks, but in construction, they usually do.

Understanding the differences between these roles, and responsibilities in your business is extremely important. The size of a business is directly representative to its owners ability appreciate what its like to be a player, feel the passion of a captain, manage the game like a coach, whilst running the show behind the scenes.

Conclusion

These roles are vital, and a team cannot exist without them. However, sometimes owners ‘Still think they’ve got it’ and refuse to step away from the field. It’s time to figure out if you need to hang up your boots and concentrate on running your club.

Program vs. Podcast?

The Construction MPa Program is an entirely different beast than the Construction MPa Podcast. However, it was ultimately built with the same end goal in mind, too:

A) Help small business owners strengthen their businesses themselves via a step-by-step process.

B) To provide a home for small business owners to openly discuss the challenges they face in a sales and bullshit-free environment.
